Home Textiles & Carpet: Selling What the Buyer Cannot Touch

In carpets and home textiles, the buyer normally decides by touch — reading the pile, the weight and the true shade of a color with their hands. The digital channel removes that sense and leaves exactly one job behind: rebuilding the feel of touch with information and imagery. A brand that fails at this ends up with one of two outcomes — it either cannot sell, or it sells and then takes the product back. Smartkid is an Istanbul-based agency that builds the digital growth of carpet and home textile brands on this one problem.

Industry · Home Textiles & Carpet

One Industry, Three Separate Business Models

The most common mistake in this industry is marketing an exporting manufacturer and a company selling to consumers under its own brand with the same plan. The numbers alone are not in the same world: in the first eight months of 2026, Turkey's carpet exports passed $1.7 billion, most of it machine-made carpet shipped through Gaziantep. Hand-woven carpet accounted for only a very small share of that volume in the same period — high in value, low in units, a completely different business.

Why Smartkid?

Take a Look at Smartkid's Solutions as You Grow Your Brand

In this industry, revenue on its own is misleading, because the return rate can quietly eat the margin. A campaign that generates high sales but also high returns can look like growth while losing money on shipping and repackaging costs.

The Right Agency

What Should You Look For When Choosing an Agency in Home Textiles & Carpet?

Ask your candidate about the return rate and the trade fair calendar. An agency that cannot discuss both has never worked in this industry.

Our Recipe

Our Services for Home Textile & Carpet Brands

We build our services on a single idea: making visible what the buyer cannot touch.

🔍

Export Channel & Trade Fair Calendar

We tie pre-fair appointments, post-fair follow-up and the proof buyers look for — capacity, certificates, the sampling process — into a single plan. On this side, digital's job is not online sales but getting the right buyer to the table.

📱

Retail & E-Commerce

We structure color accuracy, dimensional clarity and the description of texture in a way that lowers the return rate, and we set the balance between marketplaces and your own site according to profitability.

📈

Search and AI Visibility

We become visible in research questions such as "how to choose a living room carpet" or "duvet cover sizes". These questions are now asked not only on Google but also in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity; we measure both together.

Let's talk about where your brand has been, where it stands, where it is going and what it wants. Let's look at the other companies in the market. Let's come out with about 3 pages of notes.

🧲

Net Sales and Return Rate Reporting

We report net sales after returns, not revenue; return reasons are classified and closed with content. On the export side, trade fair appointments and sample requests are tracked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Home Textile and Carpet Marketing

Can we run export and domestic sales on the same plan?

No, because the buyer is not the same person. On the export side you are facing a chain's purchasing manager; they look at capacity, certificates, samples and delivery reliability, and they largely make the decision inside the trade fair calendar. In domestic retail you are facing the end consumer; they look at color accuracy, dimensions and how easy returns are, and they decide within days. Combining the two channels on one page and in one budget weakens both.

Why does the return rate matter so much in this industry?

Because it quietly eats the margin. In textiles and carpets, a return does not end when the product comes back: shipping is paid in both directions, the product usually has to be repackaged, and some of it drops to second quality. That is why a campaign that grows revenue while raising the return rate may actually be losing money. The right metrics are net sales after returns and cost per return.

How do we reduce color mismatch returns?

By treating it as a content problem rather than a photography problem. Because screens render color differently, better photography on its own is not enough. What works is showing the same product under different lighting, shooting it alongside objects that serve as a reference, giving a close-up of the fabric, and also describing the shade of the color in words in the copy. Add clear dimension and texture information to that, and a significant share of returns closes.

Are trade fairs still decisive, or has digital replaced them?

It has not; it changed their role. The industry's large orders are still closed at fairs and in the meetings around them — the international fairs in January set the year's first order wave. Digital's job is not to replace the fair but to arrive prepared: the buyer should know you before the fair, your appointment calendar should be full, and post-fair follow-up should run through digital. A brand that does not build its budget around this calendar walks into the most valuable weeks of the year unprepared.

Should we sell on marketplaces or on our own site?

They serve different functions. A marketplace brings volume and visibility, but it comes at the cost of commission, price pressure and no access to customer data. Your own site gives you margin and a customer relationship, but you have to generate the traffic yourself. In practice the model that works is usually using both: the marketplace for standard products and new customer acquisition, your own site for high-margin collections and repeat purchases.
