Digital Marketing for Marketplace Sellers: Managing Margin, Not Revenue

Smartkid is an Istanbul-based digital marketing agency that manages the growth of brands selling on marketplaces such as Trendyol, Hepsiburada and Amazon. Marketplace selling carries a trap of its own: revenue can grow while profit shrinks. Once commission, shipping, returns, platform advertising and campaign discounts stack on top of one another, high revenue can comfortably turn into a loss. That is why we build marketplace work around product-level contribution margin rather than a revenue target. Our TuruncuKasa case study, where we ran the growth of a marketplace brand in the cosmetics category, is the published example of this approach.

The Four Levers of Winning on a Marketplace

Visibility on a marketplace does not hang on a single switch: who wins the buy box, how complete your product content is, your seller performance score and your advertising setup all work together. Without those four in alignment, raising the ad budget does nothing but raise the platform's commission. We audit these four levers first, and talk budget second.

Why Smartkid?

Take a Look at Smartkid's Solutions as You Grow Your Marketplace Sales

At Smartkid we know that success on a marketplace shows up in the product-level profit table, not the revenue table. Before you switch the advertising on, you need to see which product is actually making money.

The Right Agency

As a Marketplace Seller, What Should You Look for When Choosing an Agency?

A marketplace cannot be run on classic ad-agency reflexes; you have to know the platform's own rules. Ask your candidate this: can they lift the product content score, do they understand buy-box logic, do they build a margin table that accounts for commission and returns, and do they have a plan for moving marketplace customers onto your own channel?

Our Recipe

Our Digital Marketing Services for Marketplace Sellers

We package our services around the three layers of a marketplace operation: product data and content, in-platform ad management, and migration to your own channel. When all three work together, the marketplace stops being a dependency and becomes a customer acquisition channel.

🔍

Product Content and Platform SEO

The route to the top of in-marketplace search runs through the completeness of your title, attribute and image set. We rebuild your product content against the category rules and grow your search visibility without spending on advertising.

📱

Brand Visibility and Social Media

A customer who buys on a marketplace usually buys without knowing your brand. Through social media and content work we grow brand awareness so that, next time, the customer comes looking for you by name.

📈

Platform Advertising and Campaign Management

We manage the Trendyol, Hepsiburada and Amazon ad products at product level and enter campaign periods with the margin calculation in hand. Budget shifts away from the product that brings revenue and toward the product that brings profit.

🧲

Margin Tracking and Channel Migration

We deduct commission, shipping, returns and advertising costs to track contribution margin at product level, making it visible which product is genuinely earning. In parallel, we build the setup that moves the customer you won on the marketplace onto your own site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Marketplace Digital Marketing

Our marketplace revenue is growing but there is no profit — what could be causing it?

Usually it is that contribution margin has not been calculated at product level. Once commission, shipping, return rate, platform advertising and campaign discounts stack up, some products end up being sold at a loss — and as revenue grows, so does the loss. The fix is to build a product-level margin table and point advertising only at the products that bring profit.

How do we win the buy box?

Price is not the only variable: delivery lead time, stock continuity, cancellation and return rates and seller score are all assessed together. You can win the buy box without cutting your price; the point most sellers miss is that operational performance is as decisive as price.

Platform advertising or Google/Meta?

They do different jobs. Platform advertising captures users who already arrive with purchase intent and converts at a high rate; Google and Meta grow your brand outside the platform and bring demand to your own channel. That second layer is essential if you do not want to remain wholly dependent on the marketplace.

Should we open our own site, or is the marketplace enough?

Marketplaces are strong for volume and new customers, but the customer relationship stays on the platform and the margin is lower. The healthy model is to use the marketplace as a customer acquisition channel and move repeat purchases onto your own channel. In our Kırmızı Mor case study we shared how that transition is built.

Our return rate is high — what should we do?

Returns usually come from an incomplete product page: if size, dimensions, contents or usage information is not clear, the customer buys the wrong item. Collecting return reasons and feeding them back into the product content reduces both returns and the damage to your seller score.
